The project

A little bit of history

Babu himself comes from the same district and he had not been lucky enough to get a good school education. Even as a young man, he had to earn his own living. That is precisely why he wanted to offer the children from his neighbourhood a way to make more of their lives. In Tanzania, too, a good job requires good education in order to gain a foothold in professional life.

With all his money that he had, he began to build a house on his own property. It was enough for the first floor, in which he then opened his orphanage. Since the money was missing, the house remained in this condition for almost 3 years: the second floor in the shell and the roof was completely missing. There were always small donations from volunteers, so that more or less the most necessary things were taken care of.

In 2018, Babu received official certification and unrestricted registration for his orphanage, which is currently running as a half-day school. Central Government saw it is appropriate and gave us a full registration with the number 00009850. Registration includes annual reviews. The instructions and regulations must also be complied with.

In January 2019, Babu received support from an unexpected side: he met a Swiss woman who agreed to support him in his project. This enabled the roof to be completed and the second floor to be finished. Various additions could also be made and a wall could be erected around the property to ensure that the children and employees were safe.

On May, 2019, the association was founded in Switzerland with the aim of collecting donations to support the orphanage financially. We are convinced that we will work together to implement the planned projects.

Four years later, on March 2020, the Government granted the license as a tourist company. This means that from now on, Enjivai Safaris and Volunteering Limited can offer accomodation and touristic activities to people who want to see a more social side of Tanzania. All the resources obtained from these activities will go to the orphanage and the rural community behind.

The project is currently being led by Babu himself and Rita Strasser from Switzerland. Babu is mainly responsible for the orphanage and the care of the volunteers on site. Rita Strasser is responsible for finances, bookings and advertising. On site we are supported by our 6 motivated employees.

The objective of Enjivai Orphanage

Strengthening the community by promoting the well-being of less privileged children and orphans by supporting their families.

This means:

  • Promotion of the standard of living for needy children and orphans through improving their health, education, and a balanced diet, which are essential for the daily lives of the children.
  • The children are provided with a good basic requirement for the regular school years.
  • Provide orphans with skills for self-reliance and the improvement of individual life.
  • Strengthening programs to promote good training that meets international standards.

The future: a school

Public schools in Tanzania are different from having in Europe. They rarely teach English and there are usually more than 80 students per class, which is a very difficult learning environment.

Our greatest wish is to build our own school, where we can teach children throughout their school years. The place should also offer the possibility of permanent accommodation for children who no longer have parents.

How do we achieve our goals?

We are currently collecting money for:

  • The construction of a school with an attached boarding house (various construction phases: total construction costs: USD 500,000).
  • The school equipement (approximate costs: USD 70’000).
  • The school operation in the first 2 years (approximate costs: USD 100’000).
  • The construction of a small clinic (approximate costs:  USD 80’000 US).
  • The construction of a school with an attached boarding school approx. (approximate costs: USD 500’000).

Furthermore, we have ongoing projects for which we need donations:

  • The salaries of the teachers, the cook and the caregivers must be financed.
  • To pay the ongoing monthly costs.
  • Supporting of small projects to generate money for our project.

It’s no easy, but we have hope and faith that with hard work we will achieve it.

The creation of the Association

On May, 2019, the association with the name «Orphanage Enjivai Tanzania» was founded in Switzerland by Rita Strasser with the aim of collecting donations to support the orphanage financially.

We are convinced that we will work together to implement the planned projects. We are looking forward to interested members and financial donations. For example, become a member and support our association in our activities.

Thanks to the donations, we could build the roof of the orphanage, a very important step before the rainy season.

Ishumael Dominick Mollel

DIRECTOR

My name is Ishumael Dominick Mollel. I grew up in Arusha. For many children in my neighborhood, it is unthinkable from a financial perspective that they can attend school. Thus, the idea of opening an orphanage and a school matured in order to give the children in my region a better future. I also wanted to give the many children, some of them without a parent, a home.

That’s how I started building the house in 2016. I made slow progress, as there was always a lack of donations. In May 2018 the first floor of the house was finished so far that I was able to open the school. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to accommodate the children in the house themselves.

Rita Strasser

PRESIDENT

Since 2019 I have been supported by my wife Rita Strasser. She comes from Switzerland and has founded an association there to collect donations for the orphanage. With their support, we were able to achieve a lot.

Our workers

Meanwhile, there are 2 teachers working there, a cook, a security guard, a housemaid for the hostel, and a gardener (our gardener is missing from the picture).
